In “Sonnet 116,” William Shakespeare uses metaphor and personification to express what true love actually is. The poem, though from 1609, relates to modern relationships as well because it shows how one is not truly in love if the love alters over time. In “Sonnet 116,” Shakespeare conveys the idea that love is a permanent feeling. He explains how love does not change over time, lasts through hardships, and only ends with death. Love is not real if it alters in any way as time goes by, because only true love is everlasting. Shakespeare communicates his idea that love is eternal by writing “O no, it is an ever fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken.”
